These new updates to our PIM System are since the last published newsletter, and include the following:
- PIES 7.0 import and export functionality completed
- Updates to the Import Scheduler to automatically stage PIES & ACES files – now, import files can be dropped to respective FTP folders at the same time and our system will load in proper order. Previously, manufacturers had to process PIES imports before dropping ACES imports to the FTP.
- New selection option for manufacturers to set reseller data requests to ‘Auto-Approve Within 14 days’ if a pending request is not responded to within a 14 day window. This enhancement can help reduce Reseller wait times for requests pending approval or denial, reducing request management for Suppliers. As a reminder, the "Consolidate" feature is available in both our standard approval method, and the new 14 day option. Consolidate is for Manufacturers with more than one brand, to consolidate requests from Resellers to one per Reseller, instead of one per brand from the Reseller.
- Update to Market Copy ‘complete replace’ procedure so brands consolidated under a single supplier only modify the brand identified, not across all brands within that Supplier ID.
- Additional API’s are available to lookup vehicle content by brand or product. See updated API documentation for details.
New SDC Regulation Fields
As mentioned in a previous newsletter, SDC is ramping up data content support of government regulations, specifically California Proposition 65. Through detailed review of content needed between manufacturers and resellers, SDC is using a combination of the Autocare Best Practices and member-driven and legal counsel-driven content to include a full range of detail to express these regulations.
With 7.0 now available, we support use of the new RGL (Regulatory Label) digital asset code to identify the warning label image. If you have not converted to 7.0 yet, it is still acceptable to send as a ZZ1 User Defined image. The physical image needs to be uploaded to the SDC cloud or a valid URI link needs to be identified in PIES for resellers to use on their own websites and systems.
For Prop 65 text content, we’ve spelled out some very specific labels to use in the Attribute segment to further declare the warnings:
- Prop 65 Yes/No Required
- Prop 65 (C,R or CR) Required
- Prop 65 Warning Label Required
- Prop 65 Warning Chemical Listing Optional
- Prop 65 – Short Label Optional
- Prop 65 – Long Label Optional
Reach out to the Data Lab for further instruction on how to begin incorporating this vital information into your datasets.

SDC is fully compliant with PIES 7.0! One of the major changes in this version release is all PIES Coded Values have been decoupled from the PIES XSD and moved to the Product Classification Database (PCdb), allowing Autocare to release code updates in shorter timeframes. Previously, code changes had to be held for version releases that are infrequent. Now, we’ll see code requests move through the approval process in a fraction of the time.
In PIES 7.0 some valuable new Coded Values have been added to enhance your data including:
- Video Digital Asset Types
- Three additional Price Types and a description field for the ZZ User Defined Pricing Fields
- Title (TLE) Description Code added into Description segment
- Additional National Popularity Codes (Obselete & Superceded) in EXPI segment
These newly defined codes will make it easier for Manufacturers to categorize this type of content and easier for Resellers to utilize.
If you need guidance on incorporating these updates into your data, just drop us an email. You are still welcome to import or export files in PIES 6.7 & PIES 6.5 and we also offer the flat file, Excel, and custom templates to meet your individual requirements.
To see all the current Coded Values available to use through 7.0, go to your SDC PIMS Dashboard, navigation to bottom right of the home page and click “PIMS Coded Value Table”. This gives you an Excel file that is easily filterable by column to find the information you are looking for, whether you need a code, definition, or listing of available choices for a given field.
Please reach out to your Data Analyst with any questions about PIES 7.0!
ACPN is a membership segment of the Auto Care Association. More specifically, ACPN is a professional society comprised of automotive content professionals, or catalog managers as they have long been known. ACPN serves the professional development requirements of their members for education, training, technology solutions, industry insights, networking with peers and recognition.
Where else can individuals who share the highly specialized career requirements of an automotive content professional gather with hundreds of peers who face the same challenges everyday. ACPN was born over 40 years ago, when “catalog managers” gathered annually to share tips and techniques for typesetting layout and printing of paper catalogs. Electronic catalogs were in their infancy and there was no talk of electronic data standards and best practices.
Today, ACPN serves nearly 250 content professionals representing companies making nearly every category of automotive replacement part. The conference features leading executives from the industry speaking about the role that “content” plays in business, as well as other breakout and general session speakers that will contribute to a well-rounded program of business education and personal improvement.
The ACPN conference includes an afternoon trade show showcasing all of the leading technology and service solutions that help content managers stretch their budgets further, save time and publish better content. Nearly 40 vendors will gather in one ballroom with services and solutions of interest to automotive content managers.
The ACPN has a long tradition of recognizing the best examples of electronic and printed cataloging with awards judged by volunteer peers and recognition of the best content suppliers by the leading retail and wholesale data receivers. ACPN awards are displayed in businesses across the industry as an indication of a job well done.
Finally, the ACPN has developed a certificate program that members can pursue to demonstrate that they have achieved a high level of professional accomplishment and a dedication to lifelong learning. The Automotive Content Professional (ACP) designation is administered by the University of the Aftermarket and awarded at the conference only to those members who have reached the highest levels of achievement in their content management careers.

"The SDC is now the largest openly accessible product database in the industry” said Greg Adler, CEO of Transamerican. “And with over 500 brands of product data already published or in the on-boarding process, they are an important provider of product data to help grow our wholesale and retail businesses."
Industry owned and operated, the SDC offers a full range of product data management services and support. These include a custom built online PIMS designed especially for automotive data management using the industry ACES and PIES standards, and an expert team of Data Analysts available to provide support from on-boarding into a DIY toolset, to comprehensive hands-on DIFM data services, all at the lowest possible cost.

We also welcome all Transamerican customers to sign up with the SDC for unlimited free data exports."

Are you aware that Google requires full compliance on its Global Trade Identification Numbers (GTIN) requirement for most products to qualify for inclusion on Google Shopping feeds? The GTIN-12 is used in the United States and Canada and is encoded into 12-digit UPC Barcodes. Google will show “item level disapprovals” for products that don’t meet the requirement. That is, you will need to meet the GTIN requirements to continue serving ads for your products through Google. And this doesn’t just mean the items with out GTINs will be excluded, but rather if a certain modest percentage of items don’t comply, the entire data feed will be rejected.
So, how do you fix this situation? It’s pretty simple actually. If you are a large manufacturer in need of several thousand or more GTINs, you need to contact GS1—a neutral, non-profit standards organization that has managed GTINs globally since that first scan back in 1974. There you can sign up for your own unique identifier and purchase your GTINs. If you are already an existing subscriber through GS1, then get those blanks filled in as soon as possible!
But what about the smaller manufacturer that needs 50, 100, 500 or a couple thousand GTINs and can’t afford a unique subscription through GS1? Well, that’s where your SEMA-member benefits kick in! Since its inception, the SDC has been an official source of GS1 GTINs, which have been offered at a price of $1 each, with no minimum purchase requirement.
Now, in response to Google’s requirement, the SDC is committed to providing up to 2,500 official GS1 GTINs to any SDC-member company (that has never worked directly with GS1) at no charge.
If you are an SDC supplier member and need GTINs, contact our data lab at 888-958-6698, ext. 40 and get started today. If you are not yet an SDC member, then contact Jim Graven, director of membership at JimG@SemaDataCoop.org or 888-958-6698, ext. 4 for information on this and many other benefits of joining the SDC.
Don’t delay—your sales depend on it.
